Marine archaeology is a scientific field of study based on past human cultures and the sea to explore how humans have interacted with the world's oceans. This study is mainly concerned with the documentation, investigation, and recovery of material remains in oceans. Marine cultural heritage symbolizes the relationship between human beings and oceans.
Marine exploration became most popular in the postwar period with the invention of SCUBA equipment. As a result, people tend to dive in the sea as a sport. Gradually, it increases the curiosity of humans about marine culture. Then people began to discover shipwrecks and the artifacts they contained. Important sources of information are sunken ships, cargo, tools and anchors lost in oceans. Shipwrecks and the artifacts they contained are the most popular type of marine cultural heritage investigated.
Even though it is interesting to explore oceans, because of the expensiveness of the equipment that has the ability to withstand the salty water and the complex technology use to deal with the unrevealed mysterious marine world, this field of study is relatively expensive.
